π¦π Fledgling Bird Season is Here! ππ¦
As spring approaches, we’re excited to welcome fledgling birds to our backyards! These young birds are learning to fly and explore their world, and it’s a beautiful sight to see.
However, this season also comes with its challenges.
If you spot a fledgling on the ground, remember:
- Stay Calm: Most fledglings are safe and just learning to fly. Parents are often nearby, watching and feeding them.
- Keep Pets Away: Ensure your pets don’t disturb these young birds. This will help keep them safe as they learn to navigate their new environment.
- Don’t Intervene Unless Necessary: If the bird is injured or in danger, contact a wildlife organisation.
Let’s work together to protect these precious fledglings during their crucial learning period. Happy birdwatching! π³π

πΎ Is Your Cat Feeling Stressed? πΎ
Just like us, our feline friends can experience stress and anxiety. Even if it’s due to a move, a new pet, or even changes in routine, it’s important to recognise the signs and offer some comfort.
Here are a few tips to help your kitty feel more relaxed and secure:
Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, cozy spot where your cat can retreat and feel safe. A soft bed or a high perch can work wonders!
Maintain Routine: Try to keep feeding times and playtimes consistent. Cats thrive on routine, and it can help them feel more secure.
Calming Products: Consider using pheromone diffusers or calming treats designed for cats. They can help ease anxiety and promote relaxation (Feliway)
Gentle Affection: Spend quality time with your kitty and offer gentle pets and soothing words. Sometimes, a little love goes a long way!
If you notice ongoing signs of stress, such as changes in behavior or appetite, don’t hesitate to consult with your vet. They can provide additional guidance and support.
Let’s keep our fur babies happy and healthy! π±π

Traveling with Your Dog: Tips for a Smooth Ride! πΎπ
Featuring Rosie & Albie
Just like us, some dogs are born travelers, while others might find trips a bit stressful.
Even if it's a quick trip to the vet or a longer journey, watch out for signs of anxiety or motion sickness such as excessive drooling, panting, restlessness, or even vomiting.
Sometimes, just the thought of getting in the car can set off these symptoms!
To help make travel easier for your furry friend:
- Gradually adapting them: Start with short, positive car trips and reward them for calm behavior.
If travel anxiety continues to be a challenge, don’t hesitate to talk to your vet for more advice. With a bit of preparation, you can help your dog enjoy the ride!

Mila visited us for her yearly blood test. Mila and Sharni have known each other since Mila was 8 weeks old and she is over 6 years old now! πΎ
Mila is required to have yearly blood tests as she’s on regular medication. π
So… π©Έ
Why do pets need blood tests?
- Our pets are unable to tell us when they feel ill. Regular health checks, worming and a healthy diet are all very important; however, these can’t always tell how their internal organs are performing.
What are we testing for?
- A blood test helps to provide an understanding of their organs and immune system. It also can help detect the presence of disease.
Commonly these tests are looking at the function of the liver, kidneys and pancreas.
How often do I need to do these tests?
- It is highly recommended that a blood test is performed before an anaesthetic, especially if we are concerned.
- A yearly screen is recommended as a part of your pets' regular health check.
Don’t forgot those pets that are 7 & over are considered “senior” so it is especially important!

Help me find a new home!
This poor girl was dumped at the clinic about 10 days ago and we have been trying ever since to find out if anyone is missing her, but sadly nobody has claimed her. So now it is time to look for a home of her own!
Meet Pumpkin!
Pumpkin is an absolute snuggle bug! We struggle to get any photos because every time we approach her she rolls on the ground and wants tummy rubs, and pats, and rubs under the chin! While we have noise, and dogs barking, and people coming and going she just looks up, rolls on the ground and kneads biscuits in the air with her paws!.
She would need patience to be introduced to another cat as she does not seem to like them! Dogs she does not seem to be overly scared of, but also does not seem to like them much. Ideally she would prefer a home where she would not have to share attention, but maybe with time and patience she may learn to like furry family members!
During her time at the clinic she has been desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed and deflead. She is being rehomed with a $50 rehoming fee which would be put onto her new owners account to be used for her booster vaccination, or the fee would be waived if her new owners are regular clients of ours (or another vet clinic that can vouch for them! - we don't want to make money from her, we just want to ensure she gets a good home!
If you are interested please Private message us, or call the clinic during opening hours on ph 82584838.
We need your help to identify this gentleman who has accidentally left behind this gorgeous cat in a cat cage at the front of the clinic.
She is not microchipped.
We have to assume he forgot her as we would hate to believe that anyone would be cruel enough to dump a cat.
We are just hoping it is not a neighbours or someone else’s cat.
If you own or know this cat or the gentleman who accidentally left her behind then please either call the clinic on 82584838 or private message us.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Meet Finlay,
He belongs to Nurse Ashleigh but after being adopted it became apparent he wasn’t well. We then discovered he had developed FIP.
What is FIP?
Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is caused by a coronavirus (not COVID19!) that doesn’t cause any issues in the majority of cats who have it, but very rarely in young cats can make them very sick. This means your cat can’t “catch” FIP but can “develop” it if they already have coronavirus and unfortunately, we can’t predict which cats will develop it.
If you have a young cat or kitten who is very flat and has a high temperature, FIP is on our list of possible causes. It is frustrating to diagnose because there is no one test that can tell us your cat has it for sure, and until recently it was unfortunately considered a “death sentence” for cats as we couldn’t treat it.
The silver lining of COVID19 for our cats was the development of antivirals for coronaviruses! This makes FIP very treatable but unfortunately still extremely expensive.
Early treatment is key though – we are very lucky to now be able to treat this awful disease!
Attached below are photos of Finlay before and after treatment. He has grown into quite a character. π±π

Meet Ivy,
Those who know Nurse Jade you will also know she loves her Dachshunds (also known as a sausage dog).
Owning a Dachshund comes with a lot of responsibility and special care needs to be taken with their spines..
What started out as very mild back pain lead to a CT scan 15 days ago which revealed a severe disc compression in her neck.
She was diagnosed with Cervical IVDD (intervertebral disc disease).
Ivy has unfortunately had to undergo major surgery on her spine at a specialist hospital.
How she was still able to walk the entire time was unbelievable!
We are pleased to hear that Ivy is (at the moment) pain free. She does however have a long road to recovery.
Best of luck Ivy! We love you π©Ίπ
We are now stocking dog friendly chocolate! πΆ
Just in time for Easter!
Just because you can enjoy your chocolate egg why can’t your dog enjoy it with you!
Reminder! π«
Chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures and even death if ingested by your pet.
- Theobromine is the compound in chocolate that causes issues with our pets. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is if ingested by your pet.

Is anyone missing this lovely lady? Has been receiving urgent medical treatment and we need to find her owner!
This beautiful, friendly and very affectionate cat came to us with a very deceased kitten stuck in her birthing canal. Poor girl was in a lot of pain! She is not microchipped but is so loving that we know that someone has loved her at some stage. Before anyone judges her being undesexed it is possible that she went missing before she was old enough to be desexed.
If this girl is yours please call us on 82584838 or pm the page of we are closed, and if not please share so we can find her owners!
Also keep an eye out for a litter of newborn kittens- it is possible that she has had some somewhere, and unfortunately she is too unwell to go back to where she was found ( cats are great mothers who will go back to their kittens).
Found in Para Hills area.
Today we bid farewell to one of our long term nurses, Mikaela. Mikaela has been with us for ten years, since leaving school and travelling from the country to the city. Through that time she has achieved her vet nursing certificate and won the hearts, trust and admiration of her co-workers, clients and pets. She is a young woman who knows what is right and always strives to do the best by everyone. She is an amazing vet nurse, awesome puppy school instructor, she is a kind gentle soul who looks after all those around her. In recent years she has become the mother of two gorgeous girls and is also an amazing and thoughtful mother. Happily for Mikaela she is moving back to Port Lincoln to be closer to her family, sadly for us we are going to miss her terribly… and really Port Lincoln is not that far for her to commute each day for work …. Is it? Anyway we thank Mikaela for her years of service with us, and wish her well in her future endeavours. The next clinic will be lucky to have her! Goodbye Mik!

π GAP ONLY IS LIVE! π
We are pleased to announce we have partnered with GAPONLY.
What is this you may ask..
GapOnly® is a simpler pet insurance payment service. It allows pet parents with a policy from a GapOnly pet insurance partner to claim on the spot and only pay the gap (the different between the vet’s invoice and the eligible claim benefit under their policy).
This has become a much simpler process.
What do we need from you?
1: Your policy number:
This will be a code you will receive when you start your pet insurance.
2: Your insurance company:
eg: RSPCA & Woolworths
3: Your time:
After your visit it can take some time to process as it is done externally with the GAPONLY team. Majority of claims only take 10 mintues to process.
For more information please go onto their website:

Today is Veterinary Nurse and Technician Awareness Day.
Today is Vet Nurse Day! A day to thank and celebrate our nurses, and all the vet nurses out there who give their heart and souls to the job.
I am one of the luckiest people to be working with the amazing team of nurses at Para Hills Vet Clinic. I'm not sure that people realise just how much vet nurses do within a clinic. Yes, they do answer phones and greet people at reception, and yes they do help hold pets in consultations. But they also do so much more.
It is the vet nurse who comforts and hugs patients, it is the vet nurse who feeds and walks patients after surgery. It is the nurses who monitor the anesthetic and stay with their patients for the entire wake-up process. It is their face that the pet sees when they first awake. It is the nurses who make sure they are comfortable, feed them, walk them, and arrange their medications. They assist with taking x-rays and looking after wildlife. It is like the nurses are the ones so in tune with their patients that they are the ones who notice all the details with our hospitalised patients, they know which ones like to be held or patted or the ones that need extra time, or extra cuddles. They know who likes chicken for lunch, and they know where to find the tastiest blossoms for wild injured birds.
They will go across to the shop to get apple or parsley for a fussy rabbit and they will warm up the rugs so their patients stay warm. They will dim the lights for a scared cat.
Seriously, vet nurses are the most amazing and multi-talented people you will ever meet!. π©Ίπ©πΌβοΈ
Thank you so much for all the hard work!
- Dr Trudy
Watch out for grass seeds this Summer and Spring! π
Grass seeds often lodge themselves into the paws, ears and eyes of dogs, cats and even rabbits! πΆπ±π°
How do grass seeds effect my animal?
Grass seeds will generally start their journey when they get caught in your dog's coat during a walk or play in long grass. From there, they are then able to penetrate the skin and if undetected and then can travel to various areas of the body.
Grass seeds carry infection through the skin and into the body and will generally cause a painful swelling and an abscess in your dog may occur.
Symptoms to look out for
- Swelling, often with a ‘weeping’ hole
- Excessive licking or chewing of toes and feet
- Shaking head or scratching ear
- Ears are painful to touch ear
- Squinting or rubbing eye
- Swollen eye with or without discharge
It is important to be vigilant during the late spring and summer months when there is a greater risk of grass seed problems.
How do you prevent grass seed infections?
- Keep your grass and weeds under control at home with regular maintenance.
- Avoid long grass when taking your pet for a walk.
- Keep long-haired dogs groomed, particularly around their feet and ears.
- After each walk, inspect your dog and remove any grass seeds.
Don't forget to check in between and under toes and also ears!
If you are concerned at all please contact the clinic directly on 08 82584838! πΎ

VET NURSES DAY 2022 π©Ί
Today is Vet Nurse Day! A day to thank and celebrate our nurses, and all the vet nurses out there that give their heart and souls to the job.
I am one of the very luckiest to be working with the amazing team of nurses that are at Para Hills Vet Clinic. I'm not sure that people realise just how much vet nurses do within a clinic. Yes they do answer phones and greet people at reception, yes they do help hold pets in consultations. But they also do so much more.
It is vet nurse who comforts and hugs patients, it is vet nurse who feeds and walks patients after surgery. It is the nurses who monitor the anaesthetic, and stay with their patient for the entire wake up process. It is their face that the pet sees when they first awake. It is the nurses who make sure they are comfortable, feed them, walk them and arrange their medications. They assist with taking x-rays and looking after wildlife. It is like the nurses are the ones so in tune with their patients that they are the ones who notice all the details with our hospitalised patients, they know which ones like to be held or patted or the ones that need extra time, or extra cuddles. They know who likes chicken for lunch, and they know where to find the tastiest blossums for wild injured birds.
They will go across to the shop to get apple or parsley for a fussy rabbit and they will warm up the rugs so their patients stay warm. They will dim the lights for a scared cat. Seriously, vet nurses are the most amazing and multi-talented people you will ever meet!. π©Ίπ©πΌβοΈ

Good home wanted!
Hi, I’m an aviary escapee! Actually I am very good at escaping out of lots of different cages! I don’t like hands, I don’t like people much either. I have been hoping that someone may be missing me, but nobody has claimed me and I am very lonely without having any budgie friends.
If anybody can offer this gorgeous girl an aviary home with some budgie friends then please call the clinic on 8258 4838 and speak to Tiana.
Hello My name is Jason and I am looking for my forever home. π‘
I am a good boy that's had a rough start to life as I was found being attacked by magpies and sustained quite a bad injury to my head. Thanks to the love and care of the nurses and vets however, I am on the road to making a full recovery. Unfortunately even though my head is healing I may never regrow my head feathers so I need to find someone that will love me with or without my crest.
I am a talkative boy who loves to whistle and sing and have a conversation from my cage but I'm not sure about being picked up and handled just yet. With time and patience I may become hand tame but at the moment I prefer the safety of my cage over cuddles. I have been keeping the clinic dogs company in the office while I have been healing so being around dogs doesn't bother me however cats and other birds are scary and make me feel unsafe.
My new family will need to be able to provide love, patience and understanding as I get use to my new environment and start to trust new people. They also need to be aware that I may need on going medical treatment in the future due to the nature of my head injures.
The nurses would love to have a chat with you about whether or not we would be a good match. If you would like to meet me and think you can give me a forever home, please ask them to organise a meet up.
I look forward to meeting you soon π¦
